A juvenile humpback whale was spotted swimming inside the breakwater near the Long Beach Peninsula on Thursday morning (2/25/20) . Long Beach Marine Patrol is monitoring the situation. The whale was first seen Wednesday slowly swimming about 100 yards from the beach between Downtown Long Beach and the Belmont Pier.
Marine Safety Chief Gonzalo Medina contacted the Los Angeles Marine Mammal Care Center, which later determined that the whale appears to be healthy. While it is normal to see humpback whales off the coast this time of year, they rarely swim past the city’s breakwater and get so close to shore. Long Beach Marine Patrol and the Los Angeles Marine Mammal Care Center will be keeping an eye on it to make sure everything continues to appear normal.
